Why Your Annual Wellness Visit Matters More Than You Think

When you feel healthy, it is easy to put off a visit to the doctor. Many of the patients we see at Oasis Internal Medicine tell us the same thing: "I only come in when something is wrong." But here is the truth at the heart of internal medicine — the most powerful tool we have for protecting your long-term health is not treating illness after it appears. It is catching it early, or preventing it altogether. That is exactly what your annual wellness visit is designed to do.

Conditions like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, prediabetes, and early kidney disease are often called "silent" for a reason: they typically cause no symptoms for years while quietly damaging your heart, blood vessels, and other organs. By the time symptoms appear, treatment is harder and the damage may be permanent. A yearly visit gives us the chance to check your blood pressure, review simple lab work, and spot these trends early — when a small change in diet, activity, or medication can make an enormous difference in how you feel a decade from now.

Your annual visit is also about more than numbers on a lab report. It is a chance to look at the whole picture of your health: your sleep, stress, mood, weight, family history, and any medications or supplements you take. Depression and anxiety screening is now a routine, recommended part of adult preventive care, and your primary care office is often the first — and most comfortable — place to talk about it. We also use this time to make sure your vaccines are up to date and that you are on schedule for age-appropriate cancer screenings such as mammograms and colon cancer screening.

Another benefit that is easy to overlook: continuity. When you see the same internal medicine physician year after year, we learn your baseline — what is normal for you. A subtle change in weight, blood pressure, or lab values means much more when we can compare it to years of your own history rather than a population average. That relationship also makes it easier to coordinate care if you ever need a specialist, and it means that when you do get sick, you are calling a doctor who already knows you.

Most insurance plans, including Medicare, cover an annual wellness or preventive visit at little or no cost to you. It typically takes less than an hour, and it may be the highest-value hour you spend on your health all year. If it has been more than a year since your last check-up — or if you have never established care with a primary care physician — we would love to meet you. Call Oasis Internal Medicine in Reston or request an appointment online, and let us help you stay ahead of your health, not behind it.
